Beaver Creek
- Figsboro Road, Martinsville. Built in 1776 by George Hairston. In the War of 1812, Col. Hairston commanded the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th Virginia and the 36th North Carolina Regiments and was an acting Brigadier General. He was Virginia’s largest land owner ever.(540) 632-7184.
Bob White Covered Bridge - Patrick County. Constructed in 1921, this historic bridge is an 80-foot Burr truss over the Smith River near Route 8 south of Woolwine. (540) 694-6012.
*Chateau Morrisette Winery - Patrick County. Visitors are welcome to tour the facilities, taste the gold medal wines and enjoy a fine meal located off the Blue Ridge Parkway. (540)593-2865.
Civil War Sites - Danville. A self-guided driving tour brochure of 13 Civil War sites in the Danville area is available from the Visitor Center. Includes National Cemetery, Civil War prison and Sutherlin Mansion. (804)793-5422.
The Crossing at the Dan - Danville. Bring your entire family to enjoy this renovated railroad yard. Includes Danville Science Center, Danville Community Market, Auctioneers Park and planned walking trails along the Dan River. Special events throughout the year. (804)793-5422.
Dan River Gardens
- Patrick County. Privately-owned gardens may be viewed by appointment only. Open only when flowers are in bloom. (540)952-2693.
Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History - Danville. This Italian Villa house became well known as the temporary residence, April 3 - 10, 1865, of Jefferson Davis, during his final days as president of the Confederacy. Revolving art exhibits and Civil War history. Closed Mondays. (804)793-5644.
*Danville Science Center - Hands-on exhibits encourage young and old to discover how things work. Located in a newly-restored Victorian train station. Closed Dec. 25. Admission. (804)791-5160.
Estelle Womack Museum of Natural History - Danville. Excellent collection of mounted mammals, birds, insects, Indian artifacts, fossils and minerals. Open 2 - 5 p.m. Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. (804)797-3553.
Grey Lady - Church Street, Martinsville. This historic home is listed in the Virginia and National Register of Historic Places. Home to a real estate business, this beautiful landmark offers an open door policy during business hours.
Grist Mills - Pittsylvania County. During the 18th and 19th centuries, approximately 100 grist mills were constructed on Pittsylvania’s waterways. Today, three remain in operation and can be visited by the public. (804)432-2172.
Jack’s Creek Covered Bridge - Patrick County. Crossing the Smith River just west of Route 8 about two miles south of Woolwine, the 48-foot span built of oak was constructed in 1914. (540) 694-6012.
Historic Henry County Courthouse - Martinsville. Located on the square in Uptown Martinsville, the courthouse was reconstructed around 1824 after the original, built in 1792, was destroyed by fire. (540) 632-6401.
Langhorne House - Danville. Birthplace of Nancy Langhorne Astor, the first woman to sit in British Parliament. Her sister, Irene, married artist Charles Dana Gibson and inspired the famous "Gibson Girl." Open by appointment only. (804)799-3379.
*Laurel Hill - Patrick County. Birthplace and childhood home of the famous Confederate cavalry general J.E.B. Stuart who was called the "eyes" of Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. Self-guided walking tours available at site. (540)251-1833.
*Mabry Mill - Patrick County. Operated by E.B. Mabry from 1910 to 1935 and made famous by artists and photographers the world over. A trail on the Blue Ridge Parkway takes visitors to the gristmill, sawmill and blacksmith shop. Oldtime skills are demonstrated in the summer. (540)694-6012.
Mayberry Presbyterian Church - Patrick County. One of the rock churches built by Rev. Bob Childress, "The Man Who Moved a Mountain." (540)952-2155.
Mayberry Trading Post - Patrick County. Built in 1892, it originally housed the Mayberry Post Office as well as a general store. You can still see the old mail bins in the back as well as the original counter tops put in place in 1892. (540) 952-2155.

Patrick County Courthouse - Patrick County. Built in 1822, this classic antebellum courthouse presides over the Town of Stuart and is registered as a National Historic Landmark. (540)694-6012.
*Patrick County Historical Museum - Patrick County. Exhibits highlight the 200-year history of Patrick County. Displays include spinning wheels, old photographs, and handcrafted items. (540)694-2840.
Piedmont Arts Association - Starling Avenue, Martinsville. Fine arts, exhibits, performing arts and educational opportunities can be found at this location. (540)632-3221.
Pittsylvania County Schools’ Planetarium - Chatham. An astronomy, earth science, and literature multi-media laboratory and classroom. Schedule available upon request. (804)432-2761.
Pittsylvania Courthouse - Chatham. Built in 1853, this Greek Revival structure has been elegantly restored. The clerk’s office maintains records back to 1747 and provides in-depth genealogical records. Open Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. (804)432-2041.
*Reynolds Homestead - Patrick County. The ancestral home of R.J. Reynolds, founder of the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, sits in restored 19th century elegance on the Reynolds Plantation in Critz. The original plantation house and contemporary Continuing Education Center, now an extension of Virginia Tech, welcome visitors and local folk alike for numerous annual events. (540)694-7181.
South Boston/Halifax County Museum of Fine Arts and History - Main Street, South Boston. Civil War, glassware, Hummels, Indian Artifacts, military uniforms, collections from Halifax County founding families, art, books, furniture and more. (804) 572-9200.
Staunton River Battlefield and Museum Park - Route 92 off U.S. Hwy. 360 in Clover. Site of the Confederate Battle of Staunton River Bridge of June 25, 1864. Museum, battlefield trail, earthworks, visitor center, natural trail. (804) 454-4312.
Tobacco Auctions - Danville. Six warehouses offer colorful auctions of looseleaf tobacco in a system begun in Danville in 1858. Auctions held Monday - Thursday. Seasonal schedules available at Visitor Center. (804)793-5422.
Town of Chatham Walking Tour -Chatham. Established as a town in 1777 during the American Revolution, Chatham features domestic Victorian and post-Victorian architecture. Walking tour brochures available at the Chamber office. (804)432-1650.
Virginia Museum of Natural History - Douglass Avenue, Martinsville. Don’t miss the fascinating displays of dinosaurs, Virginia animals, fossils, archaeology, rocks and shell life. (540)666-8600.

*Wood Brothers Race Shop and Museum - Patrick County. One of the most successful racing teams in NASCAR history, Stuart’s Wood Brothers have won races on every major track in the country. (540)694-2121.
Wreck of the Old 97 - Danville. A scenic marker is located at the site of the famous train crash which inspired a famous ballad. Located along the Dan River on Route 58.

*Primland - Patrick County. A private 10,000 acre hunting reserve stocked with thousands of game birds annually, combines a scenic mountain setting with some of the finest upland game bird hunting in Southwest Virginia. (540)952-2825.

Smith Mountain Lake Visitors Center and Dam - Pittsylvania County. Hands-on exhibits. Picnic facilities available. No admission charge. Open daily 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., except New Year’s Day, President’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Smith River - Patrick & Henry Counties. Below and above the Philpott Dam the river is stocked with trout. Also used for canoeing, and along with the Mayo River in southern Henry County, provides some class 2-3 whitewater. (540) 632-6401.
