| CULTURAL/HISTORIC *Denotes Chamber Members Beaver Creek - Figsboro Road, Martinsville. Built in 1776 by George Hairston. In the War of 1812, Col. Hairston commanded the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th Virginia and the 36th North Carolina Regiments and was an acting Brigadier General. He was Virginias largest land owner ever.(540) 632-7184. Bob White Covered Bridge - Patrick County. Constructed in 1921, this historic bridge is an 80-foot Burr truss over the Smith River near Route 8 south of Woolwine. (540) 694-6012. *Chateau Morrisette Winery - Patrick County. Visitors are welcome to tour the facilities, taste the gold medal wines and enjoy a fine meal located off the Blue Ridge Parkway. This Italian Villa house became well known as the temporary residence, April 3 - 10, 1865, of Jefferson Davis, during his final days as president of the Confederacy. Grey Lady - Church Street, Martinsville. This historic home is listed in the Virginia and National Register of Historic Places. Home to a real estate business, this beautiful landmark offers an open door policy during business hours. Grist Mills - Pittsylvania County. During the 18th and 19th centuries, approximately 100 grist mills were constructed on Pittsylvanias waterways. Today, three remain in operation and can be visited by the public. (804)432-2172. Jacks Creek Covered Bridge - Patrick County. Crossing the Smith River just west of Route 8 about two miles south of Woolwine, the 48-foot span built of oak was constructed in 1914. (540) 694-6012. Historic Henry County Courthouse - Martinsville. Located on the square in Uptown Martinsville, the courthouse was reconstructed around 1824 after the original, built in 1792, was destroyed by fire. (540) 632-6401. Langhorne House - Danville. Birthplace of Nancy Langhorne Astor, the first woman to sit in British Parliament. Her sister, Irene, married artist Charles Dana Gibson and inspired the famous "Gibson Girl." Open by appointment only. (804)799-3379. *Laurel Hill - Patrick County. Birthplace and childhood home of the famous Confederate cavalry general J.E.B. Stuart who was called the "eyes" of Robert E. Lees Army of Northern Virginia. Self-guided walking tours available at site. (540)251-1833. *Mabry Mill - Patrick County. Operated by E.B. Mabry from 1910 to 1935 and made famous by artists and photographers the world over. A trail on the Blue Ridge Parkway takes visitors to the gristmill, sawmill and blacksmith shop. Oldtime skills are demonstrated in the summer. (540)694-6012. Built in 1892, it originally housed the Mayberry Post Office as well as a general store. You can still see the old mail bins in the back as well as the original counter tops put in place in 1892. Patrick County Courthouse - Patrick County. Built in 1822, this classic antebellum courthouse presides over the Town of Stuart and is registered as a National Historic Landmark. Pittsylvania Courthouse - Chatham. Built in 1853, this Greek Revival structure has been elegantly restored. The ancestral home of R.J. Reynolds, founder of the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, sits in restored 19th century elegance on the Reynolds Plantation in Critz.
